74: The Opposites (A Second Post in the Wake of 9/11/2016)

Friends,

Below, another few lines from Mr. Ruskin for consideration in these hard moments: two sentences from The Political Economy of Art, his first sustained work on what makes for a good life together:

All enmity, jealously, opposition and secrecy are wholly, and in all circumstances, destructive in their nature–not productive; all kindnesses, fellowship, and communicativeness are invariably productive in their operation–not destructive. And the principles of opposition and exclusiveness are not rendered less fatal, but more fatal, by their acceptance among large masses of men–more fatal I say, exactly in proportion as the influence is more secret.

Be well out there.

Jim
